1. Preparation – Steam Clean Your Oven Naturally

A helpful natural tip to clean your oven – try a lemon steam clean. Whereas this won’t remove all the dirt from inside your oven, it will make it lot easier to shift upon scrubbing. Use this technique as an all-natural prep for oven cleaning.

Cleaning naturally

  1. Take a large oven-proof bowl
  2. 3/4 fill with hot water
  3. Take 3 lemons, cut in half and squeeze the juice into the water
  4. Pop it in the oven, shut the door
  5. Turn the oven on to a moderate temperature
  6. When the water starts to boil turn off the oven and leave for a few hours.
  7. The steam from the boiling water will circulate inside the oven, making dirt and grime easier to clean

2.  The Clean Itself

A lot of articles suggest that you use cleaning combinations of baking soda and vinegar.  Whereas this is a fun experiment – as the two chemicals react when they meet and bubble –  OvenKing has found that this doesn’t make always an effective cleaner. The reason? The bubbling reaction is actually the baking soda neutralising the acidity in the vinegar.

But don’t despair. OvenKing has found some excellent alternatives to the mythic Baking Soda and Vinegar combo.

Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a naturally occurring crystalline compound.

  1. Baking soda and water
  2. Combine the two to form a thin paste – you want it spreadable but malleable.
  3. Remove the racks from the oven – coat the inside and the racks liberally.
  4. Leave for 20 minutes
  5. Wipe clean

Should you wish to use some household products, you can get some great bio washing up liquid. Adding a teaspoon of this will help cut through grease, and will create a lovely smell.

  1. Baking soda (half a cup) hydrogen peroxide (quarter cup) dish soap (1 teaspoon)
  2. Remove the racks from the oven – coat the inside and the racks liberally.
  3. Leave for 20 minutes
  4. Wipe clean

Why this works- unlike the vinegar combos, these complement each other and result in a lovely clean. Hydrogen peroxide acts as a bleach – which helps disinfect and also brightens. Baking soda is mildly abrasive – removing dirt and grime and getting into the grout.

3. Maintaining A Clean Oven

The more often you lightly clean your oven, the less often it’ll need a deep clean.

After use, when the oven is cool, use a damp cloth to remove food debris and grime. If you’d like to use an all-natural cleaner we recommend this all-round all-purpose cleaner, that you can make yourself. Here, we recommend getting the vinegar out – as there’s no baking soda to react with.

  1. Combine 1 cup distilled water with 1 cup white vinegar
  2. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the mixture
  3. Add 15 drops essential oil (orange, or lemon)
  4. Pour mixture into a spray bottle and shake thoroughly before use.
  5. Spray and wipe clean with a clean cloth
There you have an effective all-natural cleaner, that will smell lovely!
