We’ve all heard of ‘self cleaning ovens’ and a lot of people argue with us that if they have a self cleaning oven then they don’t need a professional oven cleaner to do the work that their oven should be doing in the first place. In short they don’t actually clean your oven, not in the way that you would think. It is true that self cleaning ovens are able to burn food debris and any spillages to the point where they effectively disappear.

Self cleaning ovens use an approximately 900 degrees Fahrenheit (482 degrees Celsius) temperature cycle to burn off spills leftover from baking, without the use of any chemicals. A self-cleaning oven is designed with a mechanical interlock (patented in 1982) to keep the oven door locked and closed during and soon after the high-temperature cleaning cycle, which can be approximately three hours. The door stays locked to prevent burn injuries. You can open the oven door after the oven cools to approximately 600 F (315 C).

photo 1(7) photo 3(2)In principle this all sounds good, but the reality of it is quite different. If baking spills are not cleaned up or wiped prior to the cleaning cycle then a lot of smoke and smells are created during the process which is both unpleasant and potentially harmful to the occupants of the house. It’s a good idea to remove all pets from the area when the oven is operating within its self cleaning cycle. There have been reports of oven heated Teflon-coated items releasing odourless fumes that are deadly to pets, especially small birds.

Although self cleaning ovens are capable of reaching temperatures of 900 degrees Celsius this is still not high enough to remove baked on dirt and grime completely… It will do a good job of removing the bulk of remaining food but, like all things over time build up and your oven will need a professional deep clean eventually. In the long term having your oven operate at such high temperatures will (over time) damage many of the internal components such as the door seals increasing the money you’ll be spending on just keeping the oven running properly. Also the aim of the self cleaning cycle isn’t to actually make your oven look nice but to simply aid in stripping away the more tough to remove food deposits. Fortunately for you Oven King are capable of deep cleaning self cleaning ovens and restoring them back to showroom condition, we aren’t deterring you from buying a self cleaning oven as they do in fact work to a certain degree, all we have noticed is that self cleaning ovens require a deep clean less often than normal ovens and the self cleaning process slows down the gradual build up of food and dirt.
